Thanks for the entry. Was unaware of the 'Birkenhead' story - sad, and yet inspiring to think of the bravery of those men.
Did you find out anything about that other great 'tradition', that of the Captain going down with his ship? One source I read claimed that this was romantic fiction, and that no one in the days of sail ever thought of anything so silly.

I would have to speak to my Dad.. As a child he often told me of a ship that collided in the Manchester Ship Canal. The captain saw all his crew safely off ship and went back into the wheelhouse. He went down with his ship. It's not an old wives tale, as Dad could name the ship and the captain.
