Most Dracula references are 19th century and Slavonic but I am currently reading Spenser' s Fairie Queen. In the first canto verses numbered 30 and thereabouts Spenser characterises Nosferatu to a tee plus some. Whilst ridiculing his bizarre beliefs, he describes a hermit' s nocturnal practices with a pair of trained bats, one of which (he believes) he has sent to waken Hecate as a messenger to the devil.
He spends some 15 brilliant verses on the hermit' s satanic madness so the origins of the Gothic tale may be far older.
