Wow, a populace descended from prison inmates! Sounds like a place not a million miles from New Zealand.
D'you reckon this is where the French pinched the word 'bistro' from?

Bistro was brought to French language by the Cossacks, when they came to Paris, in the 19th century, after some defeats against continental armies. It means fast, but it seems that the Cossacks were in such a hurry to go and drink, that French people interpreted this hurry as the place were to drink... This is what the legend says...
