Great article, Marv, and historically rich too!

That Newspaper Rock intrigues me greatly. How many tribes have left their "Kilroy Was Here" on it? Were they all Navajo or predecessors?

I can't remember for sure how many but at least two tribes. The Anasazi and the Utes if I recall. I will try to find out for you.

Cheers!

You know I really like the idea that that almost anywhere you go, people have been there before you.

Most inhabited places on the earth are like beaches and the various peoples are the waves gently (or violently) lapping on the shore. Having something like a Newspaper Rock is a small island of stability in a sea of constant change. smiley - smiley

I am a member of a research organization that is for rock art. There is a lot of good information hidden in the messages carved into the rocks. I myself have put forth therories as to the meaning of the symbols looking for a glimpse into the past. I will try to find some examples of the rockart for you as well.
