I visited the Beagle Channel earlier this year and was told that the last pure-blood Yagan man died in 2001. I was interested because I work at Mount Stewart, the home of FItzRoy's grandfather, the 1st Marquess of Londonderry, and we are commemorating the 200th anniversary of his birth (5th July 1805) this weekend. The Fuegians will be featured as part of a display.

Hi ehelder
I am really interested in FitzRoy and his life as well as the Fuegians. Is any of the Mount Stewart celebratory stuff available on the Web?

Sorry for delay in replying - I have been away. The display is a series of photographs with a little discriptive text with each one, and is not available on the web.

Hi again ehelder,
Thanks for your reply - hope you were off on another cool trip!
Sorry to hear that the FitzRoy stuff is local - I'll just have to find an airfare some time (and cross the planet...)
I have been researching this stuff and some of the sources make clear that only Jemmy Button was a Yahgan/Yamana. The other three appear to have been Alacaluf/Kaweskar/Qawesqar (FitzRoy tried "Alikhoolip"). On your Beagle channel trip, did you meet any Kaweskar people?
cheers
KW

No, I don't think there are any pure-blood natives left in that area. However all the local people are very friendly and if you ever make it there it would be a very interesting project to work on. The Argentinian and Chilean governments should be able to give you some figures if you contacted them.
Key: Complain about this post
