The h2g2 Poem

Mum
You were there when I came into the world, well where else would you be?
I was safe in your arms, comforted, warm and loved for the entire world to see.
Though memory of those first few years are not so easy to recall,
I grew bigger and braver always knowing that you would be there if I were to fall.
I started school and left your side, a tricky moment for one so young,
But I knew you would be waiting for me at the gate when the day was done.
Walking home beside you showing off proudly my days hard toil,
You always had a kind word for the sticky mass of loo rolls, string and foil.
You taught me right from wrong, though at times the lesson seemed rather hard,
And you also taught me who to trust and those for whom I should be on my guard.
I grew quickly and life became a much bigger world
Of song and dance, girl friends and boys - through life without a care I twirled.
Quickly, though, came serious tasks, of passing my exams
But, as always, you were there to help and encourage with a guiding hand.
Work came next, an exciting time; my first steps out on my own
Your face alight with pride that day, to see how confident I hard grown.
Content I was to live my life always knowing that you would be there,
But life is not always so kind and it took away the time we had to share.
You were safe in my arms, comforted, warm and loved in our small world of you and me.
I was there beside you when you left, well where else would I want to be?
