I swear, though I try not to offend people, swear words are just expressive words to use. Yes it would be better to use your imagination. As a child I was very embarrassed by my Dad who made up (and still does) his own swear words - is it better to say oh f**k or great groojlefrobbles?
The point is that it's what you mean that matters - you can be very offensive about someone without swearing and not at all offensive about them while swearing every other word.
It's not what you say but where you say it too...

Just want to pipe in on this one... admittedly the perhaps safest method of swearing is to create your own words for private use and limited license. I say this because certain words here in the states that are seen as acceptable and even less vitriolic than others are seen abroad as downright contemptible. For instance upon the release of the second Austin Powers Movie, subtitled in America as 'The spy Who Shagged Me' was released in the UK it bore a differenttitle altoghether. This also works in reverse I am sure, though I cannot think of any examples off the top of my head. (Probably because I'm an American... and the damn nationality won't wash off)

Nope, Austing Powers II was released here in Blighty (thats the UK if you're confused) under the title 'The Spy Who Shagged Me', no censorship there. Having been to the states on a number of occasions i have to say, and I'm not trying to start a US vs. Uk thing here, TV is much more censored on you eight billion channels, with profanity being dubbed out as well as nudity, sex, drug use etc, than it is on our measly five channels. We live in the land of the free and if our Prime Minister would just try, once, to think independently from your President we could be the greatest country ever...maybe. Although the US does have Britney Speares...

Spot on mate. And I think with regards to swearing, sex, and drug scenes, Channel 4 keeps pushin those boundry's.
