If the source of the Disraeli/Lord Sandwich quote about mistresses and gallows hasn't been settle yet, I'm coming down on the side of Lord Sandwich and John Wilkes. Two out of three references that I find give credit to Wilkes. In any event, it is possible the very best retort I have ever seen - except possibly the one I'm about to give by Dorothy Parker.
Miss Parker was attending a fancy party and arrived at the door at the same time as an arch enemy. The other woman gestured for Dorothy to precede her through the door with the statement, "Age before beauty." As Miss Parker sailed through the door, she fired back over her shoulder, "Pearls before swine, my dear."
I'll close with a favorite Groucho Marx quote. "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read."
