Thank you for your entry on Victor Hugo.
I was wondering if you knew the story of his daughter Adele. She fell in love with an British soldier and followed him to Nova Scotia. For a time her family believed she had married but this unfortunately was not the case. In fact the soldier did not return her affections but took all the money he could from her and she was more or less left destitute. I can't recall the end of the story - I think at one point her brother came to Nova Scotia. If you want more information I can dig up sime references. Just thought you might be interested as, I believe, Adele's fate is not covered in all biographies of Hugo.

I believe she followed him to Jamaica or some other godforsakenhellhole in the Caribbean - where I seem to recall her father made some effort to recover her from a life of destitution and disease.
There was this movie see ..but it was a while ago and now I'm getting it confused with Alvira Madigan and that Kubrick one about the war of 1812 based on the novel by... ???
*Wanders off to watch more TV*

Actually it was Barbados she went to after NS. Eventually she went back to France and lived to 85 in an institution.
There was a movie about it by Francois Truffaut. The Kubric one you are thinking about could be Barry Lindon which I think was the same historical period. But I have been wrong before

Francois Truffaut ..! See I never would have remebered that! Thanks. Bits of that film were shot in Halifax at the Citadel and the bookstore and street scenes were at the Historic Properties area.
The exterior knobby-hills shots with the lady and the officer in period costume moving about over grassy knolls and ramparts reminded me of similar scenes in Alvira Madigan and my mind wandered over hill and dale in a 19th century kinda way...
And Barry Lyndon ..of course. Now that one I might have remembered eventually ..just like I'll think of the writer ..eventually.
*wanders off muttering ..Hardy? ..no ..*
[I saw you mention elsewhere certain facts which lead me to believe you must be in the Industrial Cape Breton area..?]

William Makepeace Thackery is the author you are trying to remember.
Don't know how you put me in industrial Cape Breton. I have been known to rant about coal mines but I don't think I've done that here. I somehow imagine you are in the Valley for no reason whatsoever!
I'm actually in the home of the Bluenose and can see it now from my window - that is if I were looking out the window. Right now I'm looking at the computer screen.

It was your reference elsewhere to the replacement of local constabulary by RCMP patrols which had much publicity and controversy when it happened in the Sydney area. Didn't realise that happened in Lunenburg too. You are in Lunenburg then? I am in Prospect Bay, halfway between the big city and Peggy's Cove. But my 'heart' is in the valley ..how perceptive of you!
As to your name I would normally agree and would certainly be pleased for you if you decide to do that ...but I really like the paranthetical "I'll stick to the number for now!" which has become familiar and makes a true and honest statement which I think all h2g2 researchers can identify with. It's unique, self assertive and yet reserved - I wish you luck in finding a nickname that says all that!
Thanks for Thackrey (Thackeray?) I never read much of him and was blown away by the film, amazed that it was he who wrote it considering the subject. I was expecting "Emma" in trousers or something and only went because it was Kubrick. I can now distinctly remember making a point to read him. And that intention is now as fresh as it ever was...

I think we have gone a little off topic for this space - I'm going to visit your page and leave a message there.
