I went to see Toy Story 2 yesterday... very impressive. Especially the use of textures on the dog and Al's face.

Agreed on Toy Story II - there was a section of "20/20" or one of those shows about the textures. The goal was to make the figures look "less perfect" i.e. more realistic. The team was scanning all kinds of pimples, four o'clock shadow, etc. One particularly scruffy guy was pretty popular ... smiley - smiley

If you did the Ruins pic with povray, try a dusty atmosphere and a tight-beam spotlight. see povhelp for details

If you're strapped for cash, Newtek (the makers of Lightwave) also produce a chopped down version of Lightwave called "Inspire 3D" which is very reasonably priced and does most of the things its big brother can...

Or if you're really strapped for cash and need more than a stripped-down version of a stratospherically-priced program, you might take a look at Animation: Master from Hash Inc. (http://www.hash.com). The entire program costs less than individual plug-ins for other programs. Still, for character animation this is the program to own, bar none. You may hear of stability problems, although the latest version is much more stable than even last year's model. Admittedly, though, for the price they're asking most people can handle a few minor bugs ...

found another freebie. It's called strata 3d. Looks interesting, though I'm not entirely impressed with it. But hey, its a free download at http://www.3d.com so I can't really complain. Got an interesting web delivery system too, it appears.
