In addition to your comments on flying reindeer, Santa's red and white garb is said to reflect the fly agaric's colour scheme.

Also, there are said to be ways of preparing the mushroom that remove the toxins, leaving the psycho-active agents that don't involve reindeer piss, imagine how difficult that is to collect!

For these reasons, I suspect, the fly agaric is often pictured with a gnome sitting on it.

It also makes a good pesticide - hence the name...

Actually, the classic red and white garbed Santa is due to Coca Cola dressing him in these colours to reflect their logo, I think during the 1950's.
