Is it really that bad?

I was planning to go to university in Reading when I leave school in a year or so, but this has discouraged me somewhat. What's it like for a student there? Is the cost of living high (I have gone through my teenage years staunchly refusing to get of my arse and get a job, so money is important)?
I reckon I'll visit the place before I sign up for a course there, at least, since I have not heard great things from anyone I have asked
