I'd give it all up for a new copy of National Lampoon that was as good as the first years.
*Buy this magazine or we'll shoot the dog.* *Playing with your food issue.* *Great blunders in Royal ettiquite.*

The first year is usualy a ground breaking experience, trying new stuff, stunning the world ..all that.
I think National Lampoon is stil being published, not sure though.
I have seen the cover you speek of, Mad ahd a simular request in the earlier issues..say, or actualy begging "Please buy this comic"
I think thats how it went... it was back when Mad was still a comic.
Later, when it was a magazine it had a cover one month that read in big bold letters "Dont buy this magazine!"
What I realy love about the old Magazines, and books for that matter, is the smell of decaying paper ***sniff sniff, ahhh***

Aaaahhhhhh. Eau de bookstorewhereyoucanbarelyturnaroundbecauseofthestacksofbooks.
National Lampoon might still exist, but long ago it lost it's edge. After the alma mater made Animal House they all went beyond only the printed word. Sigh. I remember it so fondly, waiting for each issue, reading it over and over.
