Rice

I personally live off rice with occasionally supplements. It is extremely cheap, and even a small pack lasts for ages. It is also a very effective basic food. Some Oriental people eat nothing but it, but theirs is fresh rice, admittably.
However, I did hear a story of a student in Cambridge, who at the start of his first term cooked up an enormous amount of rice and packed it into a draw in his desk. It formed a large solid lump, and all that year, whenever he felt hungry he would reach into his draw and break off a piece.
One day he was admitted to hospital - but not with a stomach complaint - he was the first British case of scurvy for over a hundred years!
