For the slightly up market winter-weekend-which-can-last-into-the-week meal how about getting a big saucepan and filling it with any large chopped vegetable (chosen by the various colours) potatoes chopped too and adding the cheapest stewing steak you can find. Add some very cheap red wine (drink the rest) and put on a low gas for as long as like.
