i thought nuclear bombs were FISSION and the process in the sun is FUSION
FISSION is where atoms get broken down and the energy released is huge (that makes the bang in a nuclear bomb)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fission
FUSION is what happens in the sun where atoms are forced to fuse (hence the name) under conditions of great temperature and pressure and the energy release is also huge (thats why we have life on earth)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fusion
could someone please amend the text of the fusion level event article appropriately so that our children do not become even more ignorant about science
Who wrote the original text?
Did they have a science education?
If they had bothered to type fusion and fission into google they would have got it correct
i hope the rest of the science is better than this

Your level of impertinence would be justified if not for the fact that a hydrogen bomb is in fact fusion. Go hide your head in shame.

There are two types of atomic explosions that can be facilitated by Uranium-235: fission and fusion. Fission, simply put, is a nuclear reaction in which an atomic nucleus splits into fragments, usually two fragments of comparable mass, emitting 100 million to several hundred million volts of energy. This energy is expelled explosively and violently in the atomic bomb. A fusion reaction is usually started with a fission reaction, but unlike the fission (atomic) bomb, the fusion (hydrogen) bomb derives its power from the fusing of nuclei of various hydrogen isotopes into helium nuclei. Most nuclear weapons are A bombs (fission) not H bombs (fusion kicked off by fission)
The article is misleading if not entirely wrong.

"The mechanism is nuclear fusion". This what the article states and if we had a nuclear war now we would be throwing A bombs not H bombs we would burn due to fission not fusion.

Really? I love to know where you got that little nugget of wisdom. The article however would be improved if it made the distinction between the two and perhaps added bit of history behind each, but given that the h2g2 are made by the public not a bad effort overall.
Key: Complain about this post
