A Conversation for Cartoons

The cat came back

Don't know when this was made, but it's quite good.
A blokey sits in a house playing a nice blues riff on a Sousaphone:
"The cat came back the very next day…
The cat came back - he thought it was a goner
but the cat came back; it just wouldn't stay awaaaaayyy…"

Various images of the blokey trying to get rid of the cat accompany the repetition of the rhyme.

Harvey

Is that the one with the huge hat that would generally destroy the whole place. I seem to remember something about that.

Nope, that was 'The Cat in the Hat' and 'The Cat in the Hat Came Back' by Dr. Seuss. Nothing like The Cat Came Back without the hat. Thing 1 and Thing 2 were the ones that knackered things.

I didn't know there was a cartoon about the cat coming back but I remember the song, sort of:
Old Mr. Johnson had troubles of his own.
He had a big and yellow cat,
who wouldn't leave his home.
He tried and he tried to keep that cat away.
But the cat kept coming back the very next day.

Oh the cat came back, the very next day.
Oh the cat came back.
They thought he was a goner but the cat came back.
He just couldn't stay away. Oh no. Oh no.

He went and paid a man who said he'd shoot that cat on sight.
And so he loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamite.
He waited and he waited for that cat to come around,
Ninety-seven little pieces of that man were all they found.

But...
That cat came back, etc. etc.

I don't remember the other 5 or 6 verses.

Ok.

Yeah, I remember that.

At one point in the cartoon, a railcar comes along and splits a ladybug in half, right?

He never does get rid of that cat.

Some lovely information and jogging of the memory here, but sadly, quite a few of the dates are wrong. I lived through most of these excelent British cartoons and know this to be true (I am 43 !!)

Think I'm wrong? - send me an email: [email protected]

FYI, The Cat Came Back is a 1988 National Film Board short by Cordell Barker. It has won 15 awards. I think you can order a copy for yourself. Check out: http://www.nfb.ca/FMT/E/MSN/19/19074.html
