Sometimes, the Wave is actually a lot more fascinating than the actual sports event.
And it gives the spectators something to do if a game of (enter any sports event except golf here, since the wave is not suitable at a golf tournament) is particularly boring.

The display by the American crowd at the Ryder Cup could only be described as highly unsuitable.
No matter what the American Ryder Cup crowd thinks, the Wave doesn't belong at a golf court.
