The term Hobbit wasn't used first by tolkein and he's quite adament about this. I'll get you the article if you want. Made famous by jrr tolkein is more accurate

Theres very little information on it. Theres an article on the guardian website that ill hunt down for you but all it says is that the word hobbit was firsted listed in a list of names for creatures of folk-lore (something like that)
