McBurney used to also include a high school, now gone. Included among the alumni was J.D. Salinger. If you're looking for a prototype for the cheap hotel in "Catcher In the Rye" you need look no further than the old McBurney Y.
As a student, one of the more interesting distractions one encountered during class was the occasional thud of a lonely man jumping out of the window of one of the Y's rooms.
