Isn't it fair to say that much of the best music that has ever been made, has been kept alive through the folk music tradition, and that many "nursery rhymes" keep alive very valuable, and sometimes very ancient themes that would otherwise be lost or discarded as worthless?

I agree. From whatever source, what goes into the folk memory goes into aspic.
