I suspect it's a direct translation from French, but even in English one throws things out the window rather than through it.

If it is from French, shouldn't it be defenetration from fenetre...or has French lost the extra 's' in the interim.

I always thought transfenestration or exfenestration would be more correct. Defenestration would be removing the windows from a building

As in foret: woodland (forest); tempet: storm (tempest); etre: to be (it had an s in Latin). A French e-circumflex often marks a missing s.
