While I have no reason to disagree with the origin of Beefheart's name, the interesting thing is why he chose to use it. I always thought it was because of his love of words and word play - so Beefheart can also be heard as "bee fart" - the same sound but evoking something very very different. The Captain's music was (and still is?) 50 years ahead of its time - but his lyrics and use of words really don't get enough focus.

It comes from a trick his Uncle (or some other male family member) did with his penis. Squeezing it made it look like a cows heart.
