A Conversation for Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band

What about Ice Cream for Crow? Another cool piece of Beefheart after his lacklustre post-Trout mask stuff. Also, TMR is probably one of the greatest discs of all time. It is more classical music than rock though - Don used his band as an orchestra. It may sound muddled on the surface, but after a few listens it's very obvious that the whole thing, along with all it's intrinsic elements, has been carefully planned.
A masterpiece. As Jon Peel says, Cptn. Beefheart is the only true genius of modern popular music. And a good painter too.

You forgot the part where Don whispers to him, say beans.

I'll never forget the first time I heard this record, I thought what the hell is this stuff? But after a few listens, it all started to make sense. What at first sounded like cacophony became very complex and intricate and eventually beautiful. After having the two disc set for years, I purchased the single CD version and any muddled sounds you heard before were now clear as a bell. If you like this record, I recommend the CD version. The difference is like night and day.
Beefheart reunion
Pythonfan Posted May 7, 2003
Anybody going to check this out? Matt Groening is putting the LA show together this June with at least four former members of the Magic Band. Donnie won't be there unfortunately but it should be very interesting anyway. You can find out more by clicking on the reunion link on beefheart.com. Also check out Mallard, a post Captain band that included members from the original Magic Band.
