In the USA the equivalent would be the "community garden". I've seen these in Boston, New York and Seattle (all places I've lived; undoubtedly there are some elsewhere too). In the States, they mostly grew out of the 1960s & 70s when people wanted to do something with vacant lots other than fill them with garbage, and in some places (such as New York City) the programs sponsoring them are under attack from the current crop of conservatives.
