Very good description of the atmosphere in a Schrebergarten
Nowadays Schrebergaerten are often populated with retired people who think of them along the lines of 'my Schrebergarten is my castle'.
Schrebergaerten (with 'ae' = plural) relate back to Dr. Daniel Gottlieb Schreber who proposed to improve workers' families lives (underpaid, badly nourished and usually with lots of children then) by having them grow their own veggies and a place to recreate and enjoy a weekend outside the city. The first Schrebergarten ('a' only: singular) colony was founded 1864 in Leipzig, and the idea rapidly spread, especially in the Ruhr area.
