A Conversation for Medical Maggots

Leaches

Post 1

clzoomer- a bit woobly

While working on a documentary I turned my head in the post-operative care unit at the local Children's Hospital to find my eyes a few centimetres away from a jar of wriggling leaches. After re-swallowing my lunch I asked what they were for and it was explained that they ate necrotic tissue and increased blood flow by engorging themselves on the small blood vessels. Apparently there is a *farm* for them in the area. I didn't ask for any more detals.... smiley - laugh
