Electronic pets are are becoming the rage especially in Japan. This could actually drive technology for other more "serious" applications in machine vision and camera sensor technology for industry by funding development. Kind of like war drives the development of stuff.
Whether that is good or bad, depends on your point of view. I hope it is just a fad -like American Television "programming".

This may be apocryphal, but I heard that the people behind the dogs had made a cat version. One that wagged its tail when happy. What further proof is needed that the designers of these things are divorced from reality?
