A Conversation for How to Prevent Computer Obsolescence

Don't throw away your old computer!

When you buy a new computer, you may be tempted to throw away the old machine, but don't! Simply buy a networking pack. these include two network cards, a hub an some cables.

This way it will be easier to transfer files,

You will be able to play multi player games easier (try playing car racing games!)

If one stops working, you can work on the other

Having two computers is better anyway smiley - smiley

There are lots of thing you can do with an old computer ...

Make it into an internet firewall/router/cache using Smoothwall.

Put an open source operating system on it such as Linux.

Give it to a charity.

to comply with house rules I will put links in my referenced sites.

Bravo, folks. I learned from buying a new computer. The future isn't here yet. I had a 386 enhanced 3.1 from '89 that I was given on the promise that I never mention it again. When the drives began to fail, I dumped it, along with the printer and monitor. We just bought a newly manufactured (by an enthusiastic fetus) CPU that has Windrows on it. Guess what? You bet! Not much different than ye olde boat anchor. And considering that the new one cost as much as ten cheap bicycles and the first one was free, well...

How about you simply overclock it like crazy?

If my father wasn't so protective of his old chips I guarantee you they'd be burning on the fires of progress right now. smiley - biggrin

Although to be honest the most fun you can have with an old computer is to rig a molex up to a small detonator and pack it with fireworks.

I pity the fool that turns on my computer! :P
