Mary and Her Lamb
The following is based on a true story. Names have not been changed to protect the innocent, but names were changed by others to tease lil all through her school years! Even today, some think her name is Mary!
Mary had a little lamb
The blighter's name was Larry.
For each morning, going to school
Mary knew she could not tarry.
Mary pushed her brothers and sister
Through the garden gate.
Then she raced them up the road
So they would not be late.
'Hey! Mary!'
The factory workers shout,
'You had better hurry —
Larry's just got out!'
This happened every school day
That lamb, was he wily!
Mary would push him back
Yet couldn't lock him in entirely.
One day, a woman visited with her son.
She peered over the gate.
She was pointing into the garden
And seemed happy just to wait.
That day Larry was out,
Stood at his favourite spot upon the bank.
His ears pricked up and then he charged
Just like a Sherman tank!
The woman, she screamed!
She didn't give a damn.
For that sweet lamb she had remembered
Was now a full-grown ram!
She was off down the road
Never mind the child!
For she had left him behind
Screaming 'The lamb is wild!'
She wasn't to know it was:
Larry's favourite greeting.
He always did it to
Those that he was meeting.
Perhaps it should be mentioned
Larry was not Mary's pet.
He belonged to the neighbour
Who one day called a vet.
It seemed Larry had got foot-rot.
His hoof was very sore.
Then one day, sadly,
Larry was no more.
It still seems odd that Larry
Went missing all of a sudden.
Just as the neighbour's freezer
Was completely full of mutton!
