Christmas Poetry Competition 2006
Ho Ho No by Beatrice
The Frankenstein masks have been packed and returned
All remaining pumpkins sold off cheap
And in their place with indecent haste
Come the Christmas trimmings, heap upon heap.
Tinsel and baubles, tawdry and trite
Speakers pumping out 'Silent Night'
But what if I don't feel jolly and bright?
What if my Christmas is grey, not white?
The houses down our road display
Their tacky fluorescent illuminations
Neighbours compete along the street
It's no longer a sacred celebration.
Tinsel and baubles, coloured and brash
Strings of lights that flicker and flash
But what if I find myself short of cash
To spend on a trend that's tomorrow's trash?
Children whine and stamp their feet
In line for Santa's grotty grotto
The ads on TV have fanned their greed
Dad prays that tonight he'll win the Lotto.
Tinsel and baubles, plastic and fake
Chemical snow and ready-made cake
But what if I don't want to stay awake
To party all night until the daybreak?
Business reports tell tales of woe
Consumers aren't spending as much as last year
The retail guys won't be satisfied
Until we're all bankrupt, with debts never cleared.
Tinsel and baubles, fragile and small
Frazzled shoppers throng the mall
Struggling with trees that are 10 feet tall
Oh why do we have to do this at all?
