Research indicates that people naturally look to their left when they are lying. Just in case the person you are lying to knows this, it is better to stare fixedly at *their* left ear during the lying process. Incedentally, research has also proven this to be very, very unsettling for them and may even mean that they don't listen to your lie - which takes off a lot of the pressure.
