Drinking in public

Interesting article. In one of her novels Maeve Binchy develops the character of an alcoholic who, to satisfy his cravings, goes uninvited to weddings. He always wears appropriate clothes (a suit etc.) so as not to arouse too much suspicion. He then makes his way to the self service area for drinks and helps himself. He also remembers to regularly smile and wave at imaginary people on the other side of the room with a mouthed "How are ya?" "Nice to see you!" and so on. This helps people to think that he must be someone with "the other side".
