A similar alternative to skateboarding is "streetboarding" - previously known as "snakeboarding".
Looking like a skateboard cut in half width-ways, with the 2 halves joined by a wooden or plastic bar, the critical difference is that you strap on, much like a snowboard.
Used in parks, or on the streets - many of the skateboarding tricks are performed, but where streetboarding differs is the ability to do inverted tricks (upside-down spins of various natures) - the same tricks seen in snowboard videos - due to being strapped on.
Many skateboarders mock streetboarding, seeing it as a cheap derivitive, but the snowboard community know that there is no better way to practise the slides, spins and jaw-dropping inverted flips when there is no snow nearby.
