In the orthodox Judaism, a rainbow is a reminder of the covenant that G-d made with Noah, his descendants, and all living creatures.
In the science of optics, a rainbow is produced as a side effect of total internal reflection /refraction that takes place inside of large numbers of water droplets in the atmosphere. Radial portions of rainbows are linearly polarized for that reason.
By far the most spectacular rainbow-like atmospheric phenomena is the circumzenithial arc that can be observed at either Arctic or Antarctic poles when atmospheric conditions are right and the sun is exactly 22 degrees above the horizon. An inverted rainbow appears at the top of a complete ring of light. Few sights on this planet are more spectacular.
