Is that really supposed to say "steal"?

Yep. Steal has more than one meaning - the modern usage meaning 'to take without permission' comes from the way it would be taken - by stealing (the use of stealth).

I think the only modern usage is in sentences such as 'and he stole away into the night', so you're probably not the only one who doesn't use the word that way
