I'm marrying friends of mine and I included a non-religious handfasting ceremony. 
They really liked the idea. I altered a decorative drapery cord for the ceremony. For the "love knot" I'll tie a loose carrick bend; it looks like a simple Celtic knot and vaguely resembles two heart halves overlapped.
