Springtime
Winter is oe'r, for spring it must make way;
In our old oak, the blackbird trills his lay,
While 'cross the road, old enemy holds sway,
Sings loud his challenge now, as breaks the day.
For gard'ner, in his vegetable patch
Slug, leather-jacket, aphid prove his match;
Yet strives he on and plants and sows and hoes
In faith that somewhere something somehow grows.
Neath cherry blossom in yon orchard, hatch
Plans for their future, Jack and Jilly Datch.
'It's spring, what holds us back?' says pretty Jill;
Says Jack, 'Because there’s nothing in the till.'
And as he slowly wends his way to school,
Their boy, young Billy, thinks that he's a fool
To let them shut him in his beastly school
When newt and frog lie waiting
To be caught, in yonder pool.
As seasons come and go, 'tis only right
(For winter's back too soon in all its might)
To make the most of what there is in sight,
Before we miss the chance tw'enjoy the light.
So let us all rejoice while still it's spring,
With friends and family, together sing
Of fruit, flow's, bees, and birdies on the wing,
Of all the joys this glorious spring may bring.
