What's the deal with hickey's?!

SO, i'm at a party last nite and this guy and i start to make-out.... well sooner or later he decides to kiss and suck on my neck, which to begin with was great. But after a minute, turned into a little harder, bite/suck thing- which at the time i didn't really mind cuz it was all the heat of the moment and was in a passionate guesture. BUT i wake this morning to find 2 GROSS and completely OBVIOUS huge hickey's on my neck and chest- what am i going to do?! i have school, and my parents, and i have the itching feeling they aren't going away in the next 24 hours... SO i have 2 main questions...
1) WHAT is the deal with giving people hickey's/love bites and
2) HOW THE HELL am i going to get rid of it!!!
