h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Far and away, this is one of my favourites.

I've walked this a few times, and it marked the start of my 'official' walking of the coast path. Alone, I did it in three hours as darkness fell and I watched the last rays of the sun from Berry Head fort. With Dave and Kev, all of us with varying degrees of fitness, it took most of the day - the hills can be killers if you're not prepared. But nothing can prepare you for its glories, either; at times you do feel a million miles away from the world, and if I'm honest the long uphill slogs are all worth it. I've seen peregrine falcons, seals and foxes on this walk; all look astounded to see you, and watch warily for a moment or two before going about their business with absolutely no concerns.

When the three of us walked on a hot day, we got through seven litres of water between us and still ran out well before Brixham. Take as much as you can. We were saved by some friendly cafe owners at Berry Head, who despite being about to go home were delighted to sell us as many cans of fizzy pop as we could absorb in ten minutes. We belched loudly and passionately all the way down to Brixham!
