A Conversation for Operating a Chlorinated Swimming Pool

My understanding is that (in Queensland Australia at any rate) it is no longer de rigeur to connect the "drain" at the bottom of the pool to the circulation system, on account of the risk of sucking people onto the bottom and causing them to drown.

More likely, in recently constructed pools, the grill down there could be home to a hydrostatic release valve, to stop high ground water pressure from trying to float the pool out of the ground (especially when empty), and of course it may provide a sump in case the whole thing needs to be emptied.

This of course may vary depending on local regulations.

Worth finding out what your kids are swimming in anyway.
