Just a Memory
I climbed upon my Father's knee
He cuddled me close as I gave a smile
I asked where Mum was, you see
He replied, 'She'll only be a while'.
He woke my brothers and brought them down
He gave us porridge and cups of tea
I ate breakfast sitting in my dressing gown
'Where is Mum? Can we go and see?'
'Get dressed... stop making a fuss!
Come on! Sit on the stool!
You will miss the bus
And be late for school!'
'But Dad!' we all yelled as one,
'Here is that nice kind lady.'
'I know,' said Dad, 'Now come on!'
'Daddy, has she come to bring the baby?'
He laughed gently at me,
'For you I cannot fool...
Honestly, we need to wait and see
Now hurry up and get to school!'
The day was long. I couldn't work.
I daydreamed, looking at the sky,
I knew I shouldn't really shirk.
Yet I could not be bothered asking why?
Dad stood at the schoolgate. I saw him smile.
I ran and asked about the baby.
He picked me up and said, 'You'll see in a while.
Your sister came with the nice kind lady.'
