I wrote to him recently, care of the BBC, thanking him for nurturing my infant love of astronomy - which has developed into a life-long love.
I didn't expect a reply, nor did I send an SAE. Within a week I had a typewritten letter - for which he apologized, he couldn't handwrite due to poor eyesight - he thanked me for writing and enclosed a photo/postcard on which he'd typed "Best wishes" and my name and signed by him.
A true gentleman.
