The h2g2 Poem

Happy Birthday, Uncle Sam

Firecrackers popping announce the grand day,

Hurry! Finish the chores, time's slipping away.

Mom pack a big lunch; Dad load up the car,

Take fried chicken, Pringles and tea in a jar.

Swimsuits, towels, what else will you need?

Sunscreen, an umbrella, and something to read.

Did you fill the cooler? Don't forget the chairs!

Bring sparklers, bottle rockets, Roman candles and flares.

After lunch a band concert begins in the park,

And the softball game lasts from four until dark.

Dad, you can look at the girls, but better not flirt;

Bet Mom wants chocolate ice cream for dessert.

What a glorious day - a bit raucous and loud,

Until darkness brings a deep hush from the crowd.

Ah! Look up at the rockets, watch them fly!

See explosions of red and gold light up the sky.

Now say 'Happy Birthday' to your old Uncle Sam,

And inch your way home through the traffic jam.
