Now then
"fit into the space allowed by the periods primitive"
Should be "period's".
"with it’s haunting opening lines"
No apostrophe in a possesive its
"But perhaps the single song which most sealed Johnson’s"
Most sealed?
How about "best sealed"?
"which were only just beginning to be a common site in the Delta"
Should be "common sight"
It's a bit long as it stands, I think you might put people off - how about splitting the entry at the point of Johnson's death?

It's actually only about 1800 words, but I will think about that with the worthy Njan - the Chicago entry is rapidly getting out of hand as well, though i do have one idea on how to get round that...

Come on, there's got to be a way of fitting a reference to the 1986 Walter Hill movie - Crossroads... even if you can't stand the film Ry Cooder's score is fantastic...
