Sideburns are what men wear at when they can`t be bothered to shave. And I know this is true of at least one man because he told me so.

Actually, I wear a whole beard because I couldn't be bothered to shave. Sideburns require at least a minimum of daily maintenance, whereas I can go weeks without even trimming my beard. It also makes a nice place to put fish bones.

You can keep birds in them if they get long enough.

I keep mine really short so the grey does not show.
At least it looks far more realistic than Ford's and Arthur's on the UK TV H2G2 series!

The problem is keeping the birds out! I constantly find that birds like to come and pluck the hairs of my beard to build their nests with. And the lazy ones just move in. However, I do have some interesting kinds of egg for breakfast

Plucking?
Only hurts them if you forget to wring their necks first.

Naw, birds plucking out my beard doesn't hurt -- I'm a "real man" and feel no pain! (hey, get away -- ouch!!!) And I get the fringe benefit (heh heh) of having a feree source of protein. I don't suggest you try sparrow eggs, though -- they're bitter.
