I watched a news interview with the world champion Monopoly player a few years back. He said that to win, it's best to buy the cheaper plots, Old Kent Road etc, as you can build them up cheaplyand therefore quickly but still get sizeable chunks of money back in rent.
It's always worked for me!

The orange group (Bow Street, Marlborough Street, Vine Street in the London edition) are usually quite usefull - chances are that someone will land here straight after getting out of jail.

Almost forgot - there are a couple of places that you get sent to by the Community Chest / Chance cards - Marylebone Station is one, I think the other is one of the red group, possibly Fleet Street...

cards can advance you to Pall Mall (magenta group) or Mayfair (Dark blue group) (apologies to any researchers not playing UK version of the game)
In my experience though I have to agree that the Orange group tend to give the best opportunities for efficient investment/returns potential.

Trafalgar Square is the other one you get directed to, can't remember if anyone mentioned Marylebone station.
I find the top end of each side works best - houses cost the same as the cheaper properties, but you get more cash back

Oooh, Monopoly fans!
The mistake most people make is to think that buying the purple set will bring you the most rent. Yes, but the plot and houses are all more expensive, so building up the site is slower.

Purple I guess you mean the last two before Go (Mayfair/Park Lane in the UK version) - I always thought of them as dark blue. Mind you it could have changed, I haven't played Monopoly for years

Purple, B, stop being pedantic.
What is this Mornington Crescent?
Monopoly tip
Pimms Posted Jul 18, 2003
Mornington Crescent is a game where you attempt to use the London Underground map to get to Mornington Crescent, created on the Radio 4 programme 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' Its rules are 'hard' to describe, being somewhat like Calvinball (ie constantly being invented and slightly silly)

I'm happy to accept Indigo, rather than dark blue. Not purple though.

Right, and does Mornington Crescent actually exist?

Ah but if you do get the holy Mayfair and Park Lane, and manage to bung even one house on Mayfair - you've practically won Watch in super smugness when your opponent picks up a Community Chest card that says 'Advance to Mayfair'... "yes! Come to me my pretty! Mwuhahahahahaaaaaaa!!!"
ahem, sorry, got carried away there

I do think that's a terribly cruel way to play though. I suppose it depends if you are after a short game or not.
