St Helena
BigAl Patron Saint of Left Handers Keeper of the Glowing Pickle and Monobrows Started conversation Apr 10, 2006
Just been listening to a Radio 4 programme about St Helena, 'The WOrld's First Archaeologist'.
She is said to have travelled to the Holy Land, and discovered a fragment of the cross of Jesus below where the Church of the Holy Sepulchre now stands.
She is said to have been the daughter of Coel (synonymous with Old King Cole), a King of Colchester. Because of this she is the Patron Saint of Colchester, and the Coat of Arms of Colchester shows a sprouting cross and three crowns. Above the Town Hall there is a statue of St Helena holding a huge cross in one hand, with her other arm outstretched.
St Helena was the wife of the Roman Emperor Constantius and mother of the Emperor Constantine who, in 333AD declared that Britain would be a Christian country.
