Yes I agree that Hattrick is good, but to make this a more balanced conversation about online football management games, you should make it clear that there are other such online games that are equally as good. Personally I like footiemanager.com which is a fun, popular and well designed site. There are a number of others of course.
I`m posting this reply as I believe the principle behind h2g2 is to inform on subjects in a balanced fashion, not to promote just one particular game.

also checkout xperteleven. pretty good footy management, make your own team and manage a bunch of fictional players in a world league or a league with friends!
