A Conversation for Hogmanay - the Scottish New Year

Barneys Bucksaws

When I was small, we had to go up to our Grandmother on New Years Day and tell her:

"Rise up, guid wife, and shak yer feathers,
And dinna think that we are beggars,
We're just bit bairns gan oot tae play,
Rise up and gie's oor Hogmanay."

Then Nanny would give each of us a few coins for our banks. My Mother told me she used to go to our Great Aunties for her Hogmanay when she was young, in Winnipeg, Manitoba - which still has a large Scottish population. I, on the other hand, had to guide my son through the words!
